Art & Life With Perry Flash Fong

Perry “Flash” Fong, 27, is a geometric artist based in Queens, NY. Born and raised in San Francisco, Perry comes from a linage of of creators and attributes much of his experience from working with his father – a general contractor still based in SF. When asked about the root of his interest in art he stated “much of my creativity stems from attending San Francisco Waldorf School. The early immersion of painting, music, dance has given me a vast appreciation of all art forms – especially painting!”

From 9-5, he works for a construction and design firm in New York City. However, his professional career doesn’t venture too far off from passion as an artist since there’s a strong correlation between the two. Fong explains “With the abstract geometrics that I create – it’s practically the same process: building unique shapes with a series of lines set at specific angles. Recently I have focused more within designing and working within Sketchup– a 3D rendering software that we use to design interiors.”

Fong is of Chinese decent and even though his parents have always been extremely supportive of his endeavors, he recalls slight reservations when he mentioned his passion for liberal arts. One of his earliest memories that drove him to this passion was when one of his teachers called him out in front of the class and declared that his art “is not” art, he reminisces “I thank her for this because without it I would not have discovered what I have experienced today.”

Today, he’s driven by the fact that success is an option and he believes one must take action instead of sitting and waiting for things to happen. “All of us have a dream, a goal, an aspiration: to achieve it you MUST put in the hours and sacrifice the comfort you currently have.” The fervor that he has for life is translated into his art. Using everything from mixed media to acrylic an spray paint, he describes his work as “colorful, energetic, and infinite in possibilities where vibrant abstractions invoke ones aesthetic senses.”
